Date: 12/2 (SAT)
Location: ROUND MOUNTAIN / HUBBARD-PERKINS RIDGES -- Fahnestock State Park (New York).
Level: MODERATE HIKE (8 miles)
On this hike we’ll be returning to the Hubbard-Perkins Conservation Area in Fahnestock State Park, a picturesque area of forested mountain ridges with lovely streams and lakes. There are several semi-steep ascents to rocky knobs, along with easier stretches of trail. Highlights include a fine vista from the top of Round Mountain (also known as Round Hill).
Date: 12/3 (SUN)
Location: GLENCLYFFE / HUDSON RIVER (New York).
Level: EASY HIKE (5 miles)
A couple of years ago we premiered this hike, which features a beautiful stretch of trail along and above the east shore of the Hudson River, a few miles north of the Bear Mountain Bridge, on land preserved by the Open Space Institute. Significant events of American history occurred here. We’ll hike through lovely tracts of forest, occasionally pass old buildings, and have lunch by the river. Aside from a few hills and short rocky stretches, it’s mostly easy.
Date: 12/9 (SAT)
Location: HOOK MOUNTAIN CLIFFS – Hook Mountain State Park (New York).
Level: EASY-MODERATE HIKE (6-7 miles)
For a number of years we’ve offered a 12-mile moderate hike -- usually in the spring -- on precipitous Hook Mountain, which overlooks the Hudson River north of Nyack. Today’s hike is a shorter, easy-moderate version of that hike, which starts with a mostly-gradual (but occasionally steep) 700-foot ascent. The rest is much easier, with a few hills and a long nearly-flat stretch alongside the river. Views from the mountain cliffs are splendid.
Date: 12/10 (SUN)
Location: BEAR MOUNTAIN / WEST MOUNTAIN – Bear Mountain State Park (New York).
Level: MODERATE-STRENUOUS HIKE (9-11 miles)
New York’s famous 1,284-foot Bear Mountain has an impressive summit with striking features, and it offers spectacular vistas overlooking the Hudson River. We’ll start with a steep 1000-foot climb of the mountain, and after descending we’ll climb nearby West Mountain. Total elevation gain and loss is well over 2,000 feet, and some of the trail is extremely rough and rocky. For experienced and especially fit hikers who are capable of maintaining a reasonably brisk pace.
Date: 12/16 (SAT)
Location: TIORATI BROOK - Harriman State Park (New York).
Level: EASY HIKE (6 miles)
Tiorati Brook is a large and beautiful mountain stream that runs through the north-central part of Harriman Park, just an hour northwest of NYC, and includes some little waterfalls. On today's mostly-easy hiking itinerary, with a few sizable hills, we'll explore some scenic forested trails and rest by the brook at two different locations.
Date: 12/17 (SUN)
Location: SURPRISE LAKE - Abram Hewitt State Forest (New Jersey).
Level: MODERATE HIKE (10 miles)
Our last hike of 2017! Surprise Lake is a beautiful and wild mountain lake which lies between the parallel crests of Bearfort Mountain, at about 1,300 ft. elevation, along the New York/New Jersey border. Included on this hike are some relatively steep climbs over rough, rocky trail as well as easier stretches, with great views along the way. One of our rest breaks will be at the lake.
[We have no trips scheduled for the holiday weekends of 12/23-24 and 12/30-31].
